What can I not do? Many, many things, more climbing into that category every day. However, though physical ability has diminished - aging and/or PD and/or arthritis - oh the golden years, at least my mental capacities appear to have weathered the challenges well. Hence, the title. While my analytical powers are in working order, and my brain functions on a pretty good level, I face a blank wall try as I might to understand the current thinking and attitudes of the world re the Israel-Hamas War. and the rabid, rapid growth of virulent antisemitism.
What the hell happened to turn formerly, at least outwardly, sane beings into walking talking spouters of hate, of absurd accusations, of repeating false information as if it were, as we Jews say, Torah from Sinai. What has happened. I just cannot figure it out.
But then again, maybe I can; I simply do not want to acknowledge the truth of the matter, its ugliness, its potential for great, immense harm. I am shocked, though actually I should not have been, by the willingness, the eagerness, of so many to out themselves as former closeted antisemites. With Jews at 2%-4% of the world population, a true minority, why has hatred for this small group risen so, frightening, and yes, to the point of existential threat.
Why is it considered anathema among polite society to discriminate or even hint at discrimination re Blacks, Asians, indigenous populations, anyone and everyone other than the Jews. They, we, apparently are legit targets, freeing haters to hate openly, approved by many. Why? It makes no sense but then again, there it is. No matter how long the passage of time between bouts of hate its return is always greeted with enthusiasm and efforts to push it further. I just don't get it. I simply cannot.
Not enough though, as Israel's "right to defend itself" apparently is determined and defined by other nations. When, how much, Israel is treated as a thoughtless younger brother unable to temper anger with reality. And yet, as a relative of a hostage says, "I can tell you that we are already used to it, ... We know that Israel is strong for itself and that we have no one to rely on [but] ourselves. And that's fine with us. And that's why we need to be as strong as we can." We're fighting terrorism. We're fighting not only our battle, not only our combat, we're fighting the world's, the Western modern world's, the democratic world's combat." "At the end of the day, we know it's a war between the light and the darkness, "
Israel was undergoing the throes of a nation in crisis prior to the bloody massacre of Oct. 7. However, Hamas underestimated the resolve and unity of a Jewish family at war with itself. Bottom line, we unite at times of threat, put aside differences, agreeing to take it up later. Thus it has been throughout the millennia. Israel is a nation which must be allowed to do what it must. It must extirpate every single root of terrorism, any DNA left behind. Vicious? Maybe. Deserved? Eminently so.
Israel is tired of being told that its citizens are second fiddle to the concerns of others. The butchers of children, on Oct. 7 and for decades prior are playing an awful game of delay and more delay, until false information and latent antisemitism is enabled to raise its profile and then censor Israel for doing what they had to, too long delayed. Hostage return? A sad joke. They are continuing to hold hostages from before and have stated their intent to NOT return the dozens of soldiers, including young women, most of them trainees, on their own land, kidnapped, brutalized by Hamas and the "innocent" Palestinians who followed them in, wreaking havoc, feeding their bloodlust, their insane ever present desire to kill the Jews. What about them? Why are Jewish lives held so cheap in the eyes of the world? I cannot figure it out. I simply cannot.
And, of course, we have the elephant in the room, the poor bedraggled elephant of the GOP, literally, figuratively, and I would laugh, have laughed, at them and their ridiculous childlike tantrums and ability to function, but it is too serious, too oriented towards national and world disaster to laugh too long. These cannibalizing demented members of the sad, pathetic remnants of a once dignified party are bringing down the ship where they attempt to slake their awful destructive behavior.
I simply cannot. I just cannot. It beggars all logic and humanity.
It brings shame upon our nation and endangers the world.
Thank you, Donald Trump, for all the poison and insanity you need into the bloodstream of a once proud nation. Now that nation cannot even back up its words, its promises because of your ineptness, your insanity, and the unbelievable fall and failure and disappointment of the GOP.
Can we even get together, to work together, to alleviate the terrible conditions round the world. I am beginning to believe that time is running out.
But we must try. We must. Togetherness has often yielded great bountiful results. Can we not try again?
Else ... I cannot, I simply cannot.
Unite, together, for what is right.
HEAL OURSELVES.
HEAL THE WORLD.
