I believe I have hit on part of the problem and part of an answer. These unusual storms are becoming more and more common so we must think of another adjective for descriptive purpose. Unusual has become too usual to continue this path much longer. Furthermore, we might think of a way in which to enable a climb out of the present tattered box of thinking and approaches in which we currently reside.
Perhaps then, a happy result of more out of the box thinking, a daring to move forward or sideward or even backwards as we seek new paths towards new knowledge and new ideas capable of a transition to reality. Victory in combatting harmful weather change, or the other way, learning how to change with the change. In so doing, we could be limiting harmful effects, and rolling with the punches, as do the worlds of flora and fauna and insects. Why can mankind not do the same. Truly put heart, soul, mind and brain into the fight. Stir in vigorously, huge dollops of elbow grease and funding as needed.
I believe mankind could do that, take a new step on a new path direction, apply all that necessary to the problem and voila! We have done it. Could we? Should we? There is a reason for the adage "necessity is the mother of invention". An example: where the techniques are there, in existence, but the hesitation, for various reasons able to be overcome, the process has not been implemented and what a shame. Endless sources of energy manufacturing, cleaning the land of ugly sites, and making great use of an otherwise huge weight upon our necks as we attempt to stand up and win the battle.
Yesterday we drove past a huge mound, obvious in the flatland of southeast Florida. It was a mound that had grown quickly via the most generous donations of the populace. Fast, ever faster, as the quantities and size of the discards so generously donated, are submerged within that growing blot on the landscape until it could absorb no more. Now the workers are busy smoothing it out, creating a neat hilltop, seeding it with grass dotted with little methane gas pipes to vent the gas produced within that artificial hill.
Wasted. Dumped into the already polluted and challenged air of the area, as we chop down more and more trees in the name of development and as we add more discards to more and more piles of garbage to be turned into hilltops as we search for yet more sites to misuse, to bury the natural topography under the detritus of mankind.
Why? For years we have had technology available to make use of those discards, to use that methane for energy rather than venting it into an already polluted atmosphere. Why? I can recall reading in the paper, years ago, maybe a year or two after we moved down, re the exciting plans to use the garbage dump site to produce energy, to be used rather than wasted. Brilliant, was it not? Solved so many problems needing fixing.
What the hell happened? Big Business objections? Too much money? No explanation. No attempt to explain the issues. Silence. The result - little human ants and vehicles crawling over a heap of trash, smoothing it into neat contours, covering it with a black plastic of sorts, accompanied by little methane vent pipes. As if they were the chimneys of underground dwellers.
The glaring question absent is Why? Why do we not make use of resources, whatever they are, and turn a negative into a positive, a debit to an asset? Will it be costly? Probably, for what is not? Will it face kinks and complications? Of course, though efforts can meet with success. The cost of remaining static will be much higher than the ones arising from doing something. If we, as the people of the world, choose to not move on or anticipate and properly supervise the implementation of dangerous technologies then we are dooming ourselves. If we refuse to recognize the permanent place of change and growth within our world, well then - you know the rest.
I have no answers why we humans are so stubborn, so insistent upon proving they are right when they are so obviously wrong. Why do they, most of the time, as in the present, choose leaders glaringly lacking leadership qualities. Why are the weak and selfish entering politics rather than the bright ones, capable of leadership.? Why? If I knew the answer well ..........
Why is an impossible question to answer. They are too many, far too many to address. We must choose carefully, wisely.
We must address, immediately, the unusual weather, be it of Nature or of the nature of Man.
Why is there so much hate remaining in this world. a different kind of atmospheric river, one filled to overflowing with the ancient poison of Jew Hatred. ever increasing in volume, reeking with the stink of the human filth maneuvering within. As a Jew today, fourth generation, with three more generations after me, why do I wonder today if this is my native country, where I am respected, as an equal. Or is there to be an ugly repetition of history. Only the Good Lord Above knows and right now He is not answering. The longest vacation ever!
-------------------------------------------------------------- For me, though, the most glaring question of why, is the one I cannot, will not, ever, understand, the what G-d was thinking when he took back the gift we had for thirteen too short years. Why take away a gift for the world, a golden boy, a boy whose goodness, kindness and humility influenced and impressed so many. For that boy, a street nearby the fields of the Squirrel Hills Baseball League is being renamed for Yitzy, his name to be recorded as the official name. A boy in whose name a last wish, - to have a Torah written in his name, for which the funds were raised quickly, and we thank all who donated, be it a friend's $3 or a thousand from an adult who knew Yitzy well.
Why, why, why, was he taken?
There is no answer I will ever accept.
Yitzy, you are ever and forever within our hearts.
Always and forever. Always and forever,
