Anyone of a certain age or one who pays attention to the evolution of words and their usage knows of the popularity of the title word, as well as its inevitable overuse and deterioration into a butt of jokes of comedians. But, I thought, that term, and the many concepts embedded within those four letters are powerful, meaningful, and of immense importance to the world of today and tomorrow. One cannot change the past, only study and learn from it and refuse to repeat the errors found within
If we keep to that, perhaps the todays and tomorrows of our world can in fact and deed present the truth of that word - Word - can morph into the word and world we so desperately need. When applied correctly, used appropriately, with no added tails compromising its understanding and purposes word can mean much. It can elicit wonderful imagery of a world that should have been, that still might be, though at present is in severe need of immediate and long-term remediation.
Within that 'word' is contained the power granted to mankind, to keep or to lose, to use or misuse. Decisions based on the inclusion or exclusion of word carry consequences. We are the ones responsible for those decisions for we have granted power to the decision makers. Within that choice, we own pathways chosen - we own the consequences, good, bad or indifferent, and not the amorphous body known as they or them. The charge was and is always upon us to seek, to discover and to keep those well able to provide us with wise leadership, acting with compassion and understanding, with a full grasp of the situation at hand and the myriad choices possible. Leaders who will instinctively know how to get us from here, wherever here be, to there, where we must be. In this category we have failed, too often crashing to the ground before we even had a chance to look around and acclimate.
Do not take this posting as a diatribe aimed at conversion and belief. Yes, I do espouse a religion, its Being, its gifts and its obligations but that is for me, personally. Your decision is your decision. None of my business, as long as it does not harm me and/or others. However, much of the power of Word emanates from Word as presented in the Old and New Testaments. These Words present to us a world where there is a powerful G-d who can and does Create with enormous unfathomable power, who thinks and creates and endows with wonderful possibilities, with gifts beyond measurable values, but demands the beneficiaries of these gifts strive to think and behave in fitting manner strive to be good people, not for Santa and his gifts, but for oneself, for family, for nation and for the people of this planet.
We are to take the gifts of this world, of secular or religious origin, and run with them. Use them properly. Peace, mutual respect, a shared humanity and beneficial accomplishments are far more important than differences. A peace of Honor without oppression and repression, a society of movement.
Hard work is rewarded with visible signs of the accomplishments. But always compassion and care for others must be kept close to our hearts, our outreached hands at the ready to give a person a hand up. The sweet fruits of victory are not to be spoiled with the sour fruits of revenge and hate. These are not particularly religious goals. Rather, they are goals of shared humanity. Of acknowledgement of responsibility. Of owning the consequences of one's actions and the knowledge to seek the proper pathways of life, though the others are tempting.
When we turn aside from those pathways of life, and step upon the pathways of inevitable death and harm, of bloodshed and hate, we must accept. that we did it, that we are at fault. Nobody else's fault. We cannot shift our position from aggressor to the violated. Truth is truth. Fact is fact. Nothing can ever change it. No matter. how much we twist and pervert, and pull, with barely any recognition of the original remaining, eventually that original form will hurray back again.
The very opening verses of the Old Testament begin with "G- created the Heavens and the Earth" and then continues on with "And G-d said .". When humans came into being it was in the image of G-d - or in a state of natural intuitive understanding of the meaning and intent of the Word as was Said. Live right, live honorably have respect for your home and fellow tenants and remember from the New Testament:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.""
The Word is the pronouncement of G-d. The Word. is a result of the creation, of the origin of this world we live upon. It is the viewpoint of a true and honest religion. before mankind tampered with it. It is the righteous thinking of an honest man before it is twisted and perverted. They are one and the same. If only we would remember that and see past all the accouterments and additions, piled upon the concept. of a true and proper Word -when G-d said. and that we understand what we have been given, upon us to maintain. How we ought to behave upon. this earth.
If only we would realize where we have gone wrong. If only we would realize that despite all the disguises of evil, mankind must learn that G-d is the Word - He said - Hineni - I am here. The same. No additions, no decorations taking away from the simple lines of the original. If we were to keep that understanding within our hearts, if we would internalize the understanding that we are humans, be we G-d made or by happenstance of events, we are all humans. Upon us. as the commandment to behave as humans, not. as beasts of the field. That concept, that idea is to be understood. No matter from whence we derive it. No matter, for the truth is the truth.
G-d said. He used words to do so and when G-d says "Said" therein is the Word of empowerment. Words leading to the understanding that we must follow the righteous paths - where "G-d said" to go, or where one knows by instinct the safer better pathways through the forests and jungles we face in life.
Does it really matter how we get there if we do all arrive at the same point? Does it really matter if we call this Being by one name or another? Does it matter if we bow or stand or kneel in worship? Does it matter if we practice humanity and compassion from instinct or via command of -G-d? Does it matter?
What if we in the past had practiced our beliefs while living in peace and harmony and acceptance.
It would have meant better todays and certainly much better
On the morrow.
Word!! WORD!!
AND G-D SAID.
When I taught British English in high school, I always talked about how language has evolved. I began with the how the anglos and the saxons needed to communicate just to survive. Then I went to the Anglo-Saxon concept of wyrd which meant destiny or fate. Then we came to Macbeth's weird sisters who predicted Macbeth's fate or destiny. We ended with the modern exclamation of "Word" which generally means 'truth'. Religiously, in Christianity, the word is with God and God is the truth. I am not at all sure that today's Evangelical Christianity has any connection to the truth or wyrd.
