"SCIENTIFIC"

     Yesterday I had the privilege and pleasure of attending a performance of The King and I. Once again, the music soared, the audience was enrapt, as was I despite having seen this, one of my favorite plays, numerous times. The voice of Tuptim, the 'present' given to the King, was magnificent and reached the high notes easily and with full and rich voice.
     What caught me this time was the emphasis that the King placed on being scientific. He was a man who wanted to protect his country among the nations of the world, bring it into the current century, yet keep its customs and identity. Not an easy task as we all know, but he certainly tried, failed and got up and tried again. To be 'scientific' was the highest bar of honor, of thought, of advancement that the country needed.
     And look what we have here, in our country, in our time, a time when science and scientific minds are warning us about the catastrophe awaiting us if we do not shape up and get going on what needs to be done. And it is true, the efforts will be costly and uncomfortable, demanding sacrifices, but what alternative is there? The scientific mind says none, other than apocalypse and the collapse of civilization as we know it. The wealthy are buying huge tracts of land, building fortified homes and stockpiling food and weapons and what are our administration members doing? Riding the horse of corruption and blasting any 'scientific' mind!
     Under tight constraints so that he should not embarrass the country, Trump managed to get through the G20 without any major gaffe, no helpful contribution, but still. So for behaving like something close to a normal human, he has received praise. What is he? A five year old who needs to get a prize for picking  up his toys? And yet, he blew it again. While supposed to be part of a picture, he walked off the stage and told an aide to "get me out of there". How I wish he would get out of here too! The scientific mind says that would be great!!!
     In contrast to him, we had the elegant Bush Senior who was memorialized with words such as honor and gracious, and war hero and dignified. Hmmmm - even the non scientific mind can see the difference, the huge gap between what was and what is right now. And the meme of 'too little, too late' runs around in my mind as I read of three Senators who are leaving the fray in January suddenly saying they are going to sponsor bills and actions that Trump opposes. Feh! A waste! Where the hell were they during Kavanaugh? Where the hell were they when their President ran amuck? Where the hell was their backbone then? Where was their morality, their values? Nowhere to be found, and to be sure, their 'scientific' mind was shut down tight.
     And so the world continues to spin on its axis and we hope that we can clean up the land, the sea, the air and even the space around us cluttered with space junk. Can we do it? Can we turn back that which the science minds, the best we have, are warning us about? Is there yet hope? Perhaps, but not with people such as this man in office, a person of low moral character, a liar, proven so many, many times, who surrounds himself with liars, whose goal appears to be dual in purpose - to establish himself and his family in a dynasty and accumulate even more wealth, and to destroy our democracy, making it devoid of all that makes it so and devoid of any humanity.
     The 'scientific' mind says we need to find a way for him to go and a way to warn Pence that he would need to stay on the straight and narrow in his turn at the helm. Charge the man with crimes as no one is above the law. Charge him with treason should collusion be legally proven for that is what it is. Charge him with sexual crimes, but do something. Force a physical on him and a  mental evaluation and then apply the 25th Amendment. There is a reason why the 1965 best seller A Night at Camp David is being republished. It concerns a President who goes insane one night and what happens afterwards.
