"Mene, mene, tekale oohfarsin"
Pardon my transliteration spelling, but the meaning remains the same. These words of warning, of doom forthcoming, of the bill coming due, were written on the wall of the palace of the Babylonian King. His deeds had come winging back to haunt him, third time warning in the infamous red envelope.
It may seem as if the guilty, the offensive and the offender, get away with literal murder, while the good guys pay a price, suffering, oppressed. All the while the light at the end of the tunnel gets dimmer and dimmer, at times appearing to give its last flickering light. But it is not so. In the darkness of political turmoil, in the corruption and mess of it all, there are gleams of gold, of light, of hope. We just have to be strong enough, determined enough, and gather our efforts into a massive attack on the forces destroying our society and our souls, let alone our future and the future of our children.
“Fundamentally what he’s saying happened cannot have happened, and yet he believes exactly the opposite.
Powerful words there. Frightening words. But we are aware of them, their import and can crush them with the truth, with a determined effort to mute them, stomp them under our collective feet as we go after the lie fabricators, including that man who long ago should have been clothed in that orange jumpsuit, the man at the head, and all his enablers -Trump et al.
- accuses Gosar of helping to incite the riot at the Capitol.
- The siblings suggested Gosar does not have the "intellect, character or maturity" to be in Congress. "It seems, in fact, that you are immune to shame. In addition to betraying your family and causing irreparable damage to the relationships within it, you decided to betray your country by helping incite the Jan. 6 domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol,"
- "Have you no shame " as they echo the words asked of McCarthy in his infamous, insane and dangerous rants and actions.
Yes, here are the words that signal awakening, a return to sanity, a realization that we have to bring all to account, to stand before the judges of history and pay their dues, settle their accounts. History repeats itself but only if we allow it. Only if we fail in our duty to that history, to mankind, and refuse to fight oppression, to fight the attempts to destroy American democracy, to do our jobs. If Paul Gosar's family can publicly refute the snake in their midst, of their own blood, then so can we. We need to, as the Biblical saying goes, "gird our loins" for the battle ahead. We need to tell ourselves that we must face up to those of our friends, our families, who have not seen the light yet, who are still wandering around without a guiding rope or light, confounded by lies, turned upside down in a reality evermore frightening as all natural force of gravity evaporates, cutting out the ground beneath our feet.
Trump and his deluded - and those not deluded but supportive of his rapacious attack on society, on democracy, hungry for power - plan to use his $100 million bankroll to further their attack, to push their lies, to ramp up the artillery of lies launched at the values of our Constitution, our democracy, the very underpinnings of our nation. Allow him to win, to further his cause, and we will have negated the efforts of the Founding Fathers, of those immigrants who dared come to an infant country, to fight against the tyranny of England, who rescued the world so many times; all the efforts of our brave ancestors who rejected the non future for them in Europe, and build new lives, new futures for their descendants. We will throw that all away if we stand around, bemoan the reality, yet do nothing, all in the name of supposed harmony of society, care for our mistaken friends and families, and state that all will right itself.
No, it will not. The situation demands, needs, requires, a forceful and proactive attack on the forces of Trump, all the Trumpian supporters and enemies of this country, the ones who turn a failed coup into a walk in the park looking for space to have a picnic. We must be as strong, as determined as they are in defending our cause, our righteous cause.
Stand firm, America. Do the right thing. Demand that our representatives in DC do the job, take the responsibility and tell the truth, uncover the lies, the plots - tell it all, for infection ceases only when opened to the light.
Harsh words for a harsh future, an immediate one that will grow into a better one. But it will take honesty. It will take fortitude. It will take a commitment to history. Can we do it? We must, for there really is no choice here.
