Well, more bad news on our road trip. To where, you ask? Well, not a good day to ask, as I fear the end destination is not a good place, certainly not where we want to be. Getting to the bottom can mean good or bad. Getting to the bottom of things means we have solved the causation of some issue or another. Getting to the bottom of a pint of ice cream can also give one a sense of happiness, albeit the scale the next day will tell another story. Getting to the bottom can also mean that we have indeed inscribed our permanent destination, the window of opportunity for changing that destination shrinking greatly every second that passes by.
Getting to the bottom also includes, lately, a required suspension of disbelief, a tamping down of horrified amazement at the state of affairs and our rotten timing. Are we there yet - uh oh. Do we really want a definite answer to that existential question - at least right now or do we wish to retain at least a whisper of positivity, a wisp of optimism that we can indeed change the disastrous reply of "soon" to "never" and instead have mapped out a road trip towards a much better destination. Preferably that mouse house, DeSantis willing, that man who has taken on the mouse in a ridiculous power struggle to reinforce his fascistic credentials. Eek and squeak.
Thus, hopefully, we are not at the bottom yet, nor are we there yet, nor will we be in the near future if we do things right. If we stand up to legislators who tell us that the "real Americans" have to throw out the trash", a euphemism for those who "offend" the sensitivities of others - LGBTQ+, trans, women who demand rights, children who demand and need food, homeless who need a roof over their heads and relief from exorbitant rent gougers, illegal immigrants seeking what our parents did, oh, such a long list. Guess the "trash" has piled up, though at least some are beginning to understand that the trash label has been misapplied. Uh, Marjorie Taylor Greene, where are you? That goes double for Gov. Abbott of benighted Texas who claims that victims of shooting are of no account if they are "illegal". Say what! You read that correctly. Are they illegal immigrants? Who cares. That 8 year old child did nothing wrong; nor did the adults, seeking a dream as our ancestors did. Abbott has consigned these people to the category of subhumans and Hitler smiles in his grave. Oh yes, the end of the road trip looms perilously ever larger, ever closer.
Another oh so brilliant and compassionate soul tells us after another mass shooting that 'all' we have to do is "tone down the rhetoric" a bit. Gun regulation and restrictions have no connection at all to the spat of mass shootings the blood overflowing our streets, the truly bad feeling, the ominous clouds of civil war and rampant violence and death piling higher in our immediate firmament. Oh, for sure! Why would we think otherwise?!
Uh, is that what I see now? A rabbit running, galloping along, shouting, "I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date."
Well, so are we. Our timing is terrible. Our fix-it attitudes and skills are found lacking. Our will to repair, to undertake the commandment to "repair the world" has been leaking, diminishing the intensity and depth of our souls for quite some time. The question remains - can we find the will, the attitude, the strength, the morality, the ethos necessary to end this road trip to hell and instead substitute a better, more human friendly and future inspiring road trip. I certainly hope so. So do many others.
Together, with all these people, together with those we convince of the necessity to change, to reroute our destiny, together, we can combine our might, our hearts and souls, our efforts and do the job. Together we can increase the luminosity of our world and defeat the creeping forces of darkness encroaching upon us. Together, we can remember those held in captivity, those in danger, those bereft of hope and dreams, and we can -
HEAL THE WORLD.
HEAL YITZY!
Yitzchak Elimelech ben Chana Sarah
May he be granted refuah shelaymah bimheyrah beyameinu.
May he be granted a timely and complete healing.
May Hashem hear all our voices raised in prayer.
Amen. Amen.
