Totally shocked. Astonished. Speechless. Frightened. What the hell has happened to humanity? Has someone left us all out of the proverbial fridge, and we have rotted, spoiled, beyond all attempts at rejuvenation? At times I truly fear so, fear that the reality is exactly that. There is simply no good way, no positive way in which to understand trends of the day and their ominous portents of the future. A future that is actually upon us, not a distant and far away one. I believe the time has come when truly, the decisive crux, that last permanent crossroads choice has reached its time. We have been approaching it for quite some time now, sped up too many times, and now the clock has run out, the sand gone.
I hate being a Cassandra and would rather be a Pollyanna, still infused with optimism and energy, hopes for humanity. But how can I truly believe that? Yes, I will continue to lend my tiny voice to the fray, to what I believe is the proper side, but, still, ... What the hell has gone wrong over the past decade?
Why have we, the world, turned to such a crooked, amoral, even evil world, a world where life is brutally extinguished. Where careless, thoughtless, selfish behavior is cheered and the future hopes of the world engage in sick behavior, reveling in its crass selfishness and anomie. It bodes no good for the continued existence of humanity. Quite frankly, perhaps we deserve the fate we have invited in through the front door. Perhaps we indeed have the leaders and the state of being we deserve. Perhaps.
I have always hated the idea of robots for the future of them was truly off putting. Advances, ever closer to the level of human behavior. To the point where they can indeed replace the excess baggage of sentient beings - humans. You know, those beings who have scorched the earth, changed the skies, depleted the gifts of the globe, who have indeed reached the brink of time and future. Yeah, us.
AI has now reached the point of an intuitive understanding of humans and can predict behavior. They can outsmart many of us, quite unfortunately, yes? Without the softening of supposedly innate humane qualities, what will stop the dubious development of conquer and destroy robots vs. humanity. Think not? Go back and study the development of science fantasy to fiction to reality.
We interact with a robot when we text a helpline. We interact with a robotic 'person' when we dial up an office or wherever, are referred through a chain of extensions until finally, if one has not died in the process or aged too much, reach a human who then puts us on hold or tells us we are #$@^ out of luck.
This morning I read of a sermon presented to a large congregation via avatars, delivered in a monotone, no body language, spouting phrases, quite off putting when delivered from an AI. Religion without a soul? It is oxymoronic, yet some actually found it to be inspiring. These are the ones who will follow the leader anywhere. Interesting that it took place in Nuremberg, Germany.
Now let us return to our nation, America, or what once was America. A country that was more, that set the world afire, built dreams and hopes, enabled them, despite the many attempts to shut us down. Now we face a far more critical challenge - from the enemies within rather than without. It is a rot which eats us from our enemies within, erodes our safeguards. A patently dishonest, unpatriotic, dangerous, traitor has been indicted and faces more well-deserved charges. The proof is in plain sight, even admitted by the perpetrator. and the GOP? Its members fall right in line, robots all, blindly supportive of him and his most egregious criminal treasonous behavior. The GOP has truly lost its soul, broken its heart, and shattered its moral spine beyond repair.
The GOP members, their base supporters now shout about their huge quantities of armed supporters and their eagerness and willingness to use them, to backup Trump. What the hell!!!!! "I'll never leave," Trump says, defiantly. Kari Lake, that crazed and dangerous woman who represents the future - actually the now - of the GOP states- openly, proudly -
- Lake said Trump's 75 million supporters would defend him, and most are "card-carrying NRA members."
- "That's not a threat. That's a public service announcement," she said to a standing ovation.
So now what? Is that civil war actually upon us? Now? Not in the future? Have we reached the end of humanity's grand and noble experiment? Truly, forever, condemned us all to a bleak, challenged and besieged world beyond hope? CPR useless?
I fear so.
Have we all sold the future of our kids down the road, sold them downriver to the worst of us? I am not ready to concede that, despite all the signs pointing to that conclusion.
We need, we must, get together. We must put aside our differences and work together, to represent a powerful united front that will oppose and defeat those who are tearing us apart.
That is our last hope.
Our only hope.
Let us learn again how to be a nation together. Always together.
