These days everyone is far more adept at finding the differences that separate us rather than uncovering and identifying those which have the potential to unite us. Certainly, in a far more cohesive manner than we have at present. Why that is, I really do not know. Other than humankind seems to have become the reigning member of the universe in this field. It never fails that when we find that we are in a condition of relative safety and workable, maintainable peace. that we all feel we must dig deep down and find that which shatters it all.
Again, why that is I do not know. Perhaps if we take a look at some of the possibilities, we might see more than we now acknowledge. We might see humor within to ease tension, even that degree which pervades the world these days. Or we might gain an insight into how to repair the rents within the fabric of humanity.
For sure, we, all of us, have the same needs, basically the same dreams. Why can we not understand that and work accordingly, to insure fair and equal access to the tools for fulfillment of these dreams. Yes, some will have exaggerated needs and desires, but they can and should be the outliers of humankind. Not the arbiters of the fate of humanity as they claw away at the rest of us, those willing to take our share and be happy with it, for it, for what it indicates.
A future where we do not step on and over bodies before us in our mad dash, in our intense need to gain that little more. Instead, we reach down and lend a hand. and walk on together, shoulder to shoulder. We must convince all of us -You. Me. Everyone out there. That with wisdom and rationality, we can indeed engender a better world. A world where the contrasts are not so deeply etched into our souls. Into our eyes, blinding us. Into our very hearts carving deep chasms into that organ so descriptive of our true inner selves. the truth of who and what we are.
Our dreams are born out needs. These needs arise from the basic elements: Food. Shelter. Warmth. Light. And Possibilities. Even the most primitive of mankind had needs. However, these are not only physical, but also emotional. For the touch of a human. In the care for or of another human. We cannot live as islands in a world of a reality we impose upon it. Especially when that reality is false and only leads to misfortune at best and anger, hate, violence and war, to deep despair and hopelessness.
We need each other. Emotionally and physically. We cannot attain and maintain the fulfillment of our dreams unless we also understand that we must enable the fulfillment of the dreams of others. These days when the world is sewn together with long strong threads, life has become strange. Or stranger than it has been, at least for a while. Our enemies make economic pacts with each other, shred treaties, and instead, we make deals with our enemies who continue to be our foes at one and the same time, even as allies threaten the use of might against each other, to the point of war! In truth, it indeed makes one feel a deep longing for that island upon which one might dwell in peace.
Without the security, at least a modicum of security, that we will be able to live our lives in a world which values peace and camaraderie, we will never be happy. Nor will our children. For we will have raised them with the most incorrect values. They will cherish that which should not be cherished and ignore that which we should.
Is this even possible? To put aside at least a bit of these antagonistic feelings and attitudes? Can we stop looking upon each other as the victims, there to pave the way, and pay the way, to our success, to reach our top of the stairway, the top of the heap. Thar obscene heap that we made of each other. As we shredded our humanity and theirs along with it.
I am not too sure of that.
We certainly did not succeed at that yesterday.
We certainly do not seem to be doing any better today.
Tomorrow is up for grabs -
and who will do the grabbing?
And once again.
Who was and is responsible for this?
We. Us. All of us.
No excuses.
