There has long been a tradition among Jews that Tuesday is a day of good luck, a day on which to marry, open a business, etc. Why? Because on that day, the third day of Creation, G-d separated the water from the land, creating seas, and introduced vegetation, grass, trees, all that provides beauty and life, fresh air. And on that day, the Lord looked down and twice, said, "It is good." -Thus the day of mazal or luck.
Today is Tuesday. I look around and wonder what we have done to these creations and what luck is due to come our way on another Tuesday, the one of November 3, 2020. Perhaps on that Tuesday we will indeed enjoy a day of luck, of good fortune, of a brighter future than we have now, for on that Tuesday, perhaps when the election results are announced, the Lord will look down and say, "About time!"
So what is Tuesday, today, look like? Well, we have pretty much trashed the land and the oceans, polluting, introducing poisons into them, creating huge islands of plastic debris, spilled gazillion gallons of oil into formerly pristine waters, raped the land and abused it and now, when G-d looks down, He will say, "OY!"
We have chopped down the trees which help us breathe, clean the air, provide food and medicines. Why? So we can rip more minerals from the earth or graze some more skinny cattle. Never mind the tribes we destroy as we trash their land. No, this is not a Tuesday for twice saying it is good.
As we focus more on the people of the lands and waters of the earth it does not get any better. There is shocking poverty on the face of this earth, where there should be plenty. There is greed, theft, and not only among the lowly bandit but also among the uber wealthy, those who need another house, another fancy car, another diamond bracelet, another item of clothing that costs $3,000. We run rampant over the very lives of people, destroy their dreams and ruin the future.
We have politicians who lie through their miserable mouths, their forked tongues, who have no values of any morality at all. And we have people at both ends of the spectrum who pursue the art of lies, the consequences of the lies and are proud of themselves. So who put out the false information yesterday on social media and caused terrible riots and damage in Chicago? And why are people so willing to listen to this garbage, and essentially behave as the wild animals of this world, moving in herds, trampling all who stand in their way?
We have big honchos pushing for college football to open, admonishing us that "there are tradeoffs" in this world, in this life. Oh, for sure, we are told, the players will be safer doing this than not playing. Spit, sweat, virus laden breaths, but oh, for sure, merely a tradeoff in life. Sure, some might die, but there again, there are tradeoffs. When did we become so cynical, so selfish, that we have to watch college boys have at each other, break their bodies and ruin the future of their minds so we could have something to do on Sunday afternoons?!
Of course, please do not forget Mnuchin who tells us states will be able to "execute" new benefits soon. Really? First of all, the states are broke. Second of all, there has been no congressional action on this spending so, ahem, Constitution?
And of course, we have the demented leader of a demented GOP who comes up with oh such wonderful ideas. Use the White House as a political prop. Nope, too many objections. Oh, better yet, disrespect the sacred grounds of the biggest battle of the Civil War, 51,000 dead and how many thousands maimed for life. A battle fought to protect the Union, the integrity of the country, challenged by slaveowners, by people who thought it better to split the country and own humans as chattel. So now this dude, who loves his extremists, his "fine people" among the neo Nazis, the white supremacists, wants to make his acceptance speech there, at Gettysburg. Feh!!! It stinks!
Oh, but wait, this man who boasts that only he can fix things, now has a great idea - not. It is beyond words. It is the plan to ban, to deny, entry to any and all returning citizens and residents of this country, beginning at the Mexican border, but for our benefit he states, thus we will keep the virus out! Too little, too late and how dare he!!!!! Which border and what country is next, how many citizens will be barred from their own country! Where does this end? Or does it ever, if he has his druthers? What then, our own Iron Curtain in the form of that dastardly Wall upon which he lavishes funds even as people go hungry ad homeless, even as people die, even as we are falling apart!!
A singer evidently got lost on his property. Says something, does it not? But in any case, it is so symbolic of our nation today. We are so lost in our own country. We have lost our way. We are in the midst of an evil forest, full of traps, false paths and evil monsters and denizens of the dark. From whence will help come? Certainly not from one who says he will introduce existing conditions in coverage. Sorry, Obamacare beat you to that! Or one who states, "I think it's been amazing what we've been able to do."
Folks, we will have to do our own heavy lifting if we are to find a way out, a path to the light, a way to the point in time when once again, we, as well as G-d, can look around and twice say, "It is good." Let us hope that Tuesday, November 3, 2020, will be the day! Let us begin that path today, a Tuesday, a step towards a better future and the elimination of hatred and venality in the ranks of our politicians and presumed leaders. A future where the hungry will be fed, the children will be educated, and the homeless housed. Big goals that begin with small steps and are achieved with hard work and determination.
And we will look around and see that it is good. November 3, 2020.
