I appreciate the responses that have come in, from the Village all the way to Australia. The posting was designed to make people think, even if only to themselves and it has accomplished that. Whether one believes in a G-d or a Power or none at all, but the godhead that is within us in the form of morality and the choice to do good or evil - we all need to know that we have a responsibility to do good, to help others, to make the proper choices. We are supposed to put aside selfish and detrimental choices and think of the greater good - but only to that point where we do not start wholesale sacrifices in the name of "the greater good". Hard thinking for hard times.
