DON'TCHA' WISH

Back to the days of childhood when experience with hurricanes was slight and we would even ask each other in wistful wishing, "Don'tcha' wish we would get another hurricane and get out early again?" I have two childhood memories of hurricanes. One was in a bungalow colony and we had fun indoors and the next day went splashing in a new huge pond on the main lawn. The other was Hurricane Donna, which unbelievably got my father to pick us all up early from school and trust me on that, that was a miracle in itself! What the adults thought about - well, who cared? The great obliviousness of childhood.
Today is another day, another time, another category. Today, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, are being displaced, evacuated, all that they have being destroyed, and others waiting to find out their fate, the fate of their homes, and whether this monster will hit them and how hard. Days spent watching maps, following cones, mentally trying to push the damn thing out to sea and what do you know? Today I took a look at the map and there are four - Four!!!- other things out there, two growing right out of Africa and one to the right of our lovely Dorian, Dorian itself, and another in the Gulf. Lovely, right?
Don'tcha' wish that we could wish this all away? I hate this, and I sit and worry for friends down there, for my home, whose fate is unknown, for my way of life there, for the concern and wonder that if the worst happens, what do we do? Where do we go? How do we manage? Don'tcha' wish this would all just go away?
So we look to the heavens, to the heights, when as the Psalms say, from whence my help will come. We read the Psalms, beseeching the Lord to hear us calling from the depths of our despair and danger. And we wait. Wait. Wait. And we all indulge in our own peculiar worry habits, not that it helps, but there it is. I write this blog not even knowing if many of my readers even have the power to get it and read.
In the meanwhile, the idiot keeps rolling along. Even as I dream of Mar a Lago as the only property to be damaged here in Florida, this man, this supposed leader, blew off Poland for an important commemoration because he needed to be here to help with the preparations, uh huh, and indeed helped those frantically preparing by going off to play golf at yet another of his courses, spending our money again at his property, and making moronic comments,"But a Category 5 is something that -- I don't know that I've ever even heard the term other than I know it's there." As usual, ignoring reality, as we had already been threatened with four of them, marching to the beat of his own insane drum, even as he basically ignores yet another mass shooting in Texas, a miles long scene of bloodshed and murder, of lives destroyed, and his comment re anything related to it? Well, maybe we need more mental institutions, and hey, I can think of the first one to be committed, can't you? No change, he says, in planned legislation nor attitude and a Texas Republican politician says that prayer is the answer. Just pray not to get shot. Never mind gun legislation!!! Don'tcha' wish........
One Republican commentator made a telling comment in reviewing this ridiculously awful summer of Trump, with his self induced disasters, destruction of the economy, tax windfalls for the fatcats - and Sanders warned them to spend the money quickly - love that - loving his enemies and destroying long time national friendships and alliances and everything else he has managed to trash, like decency, humanity, kindness, civil rights, brotherhood, love of fellow man, the entire system of government here in America.
"You can't fall down if you are on the floor already." Really? Is this what we are supposed to accept about the President of the United States? Really? Truly?
The Brady Bunch song sang of "when it's time to change, it's time to rearrange" and brother, does that make sense now. Time to change and rearrange the population of DC. Time to send the moral cowards home. Time to shelve MConnell and try to repair some of the damage he has done. Time to spend on infrasructure andget the money from those who have it. Time to retract all the environmental retractions; time to care for our planet again. Time to hold a helping hand out to refugees, to countries who need help in their own space and then that would stop the mass exits. Time to rearrange the world and get rid of the dictators, the haters like Corbyn and Orban and the dangerous men who usurp government like Johnson who thinks it a good idea to shut down Parliament in England. Whoa!!!
How the hell have we reached this low point? Don'tcha' wish, just for once, that all or most of it, would be better, would be fairer, kinder? Don't cha' wish that the damned hurricanes would go away? Don'tcha'? Don'tcha'? Be safe, folks. May the good Lord watch over us all.
